GLBT Caucus

MISSION STATEMENT

The Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender Caucus of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists works to ensure fair and accurate coverage of GLBT Latino/a stories in English and Spanish print, broadcast, and online U.S. news media. 

The Media Monitoring Task Force monitors coverage for inaccuracies in word choice and use of GLBT slurs toward the Latino/a community. The Caucus speaks out on these issues. 

Also, the Caucus speaks out against discrimination and harassment of professional and student journalists who are GLBT Latinos/as.

MEET THE LEADERSHIP TEAM 

Daniel Morales, Co-Chair
Daniel Morales is the Editor in chief of the Velázquez Magazine, a nationally distributed academic publication about the “Joy of Teaching Spanish.” In 2005, Morales led the National Gay and Lesbian Journalist Association (NLGJA) Spanish language Stylebook project by assembling an impressive group of journalists, lexicographers, translators and, journalism professors. The bilingual version of the stylebook was later revised in conjunction with the National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ.) Daniel was a medical researcher and HIV prevention counselor before becoming a health reporter covering HIV issues in the Latino community. He has been an entertainment reporter since 2001. Mr. Morales studied at the University of Southern California majoring in Biomedical and Electrical Engineering.  
Monica Taher, Chair
Media Monitoring Task Force
Mónica Taher is the People of Color Media Director for the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD). One of Taher’s roles is to monitor the media, looking for unfair or biased coverage of lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgender people of color in mainstream and Spanish-language media and to strategize ways to respond effectively. Her broadcasting and journalistic experience began at the age of 13 at Salvadoreña de Televisión Canal 12, as a talent for a community-oriented show. Then, she joined Telemundo Los Angeles KVEA 52 where she worked in the news department and as a talent in the community-oriented television show Teleradio 52. Taher has appeared on CNN en Español, Univision, Telemundo and other Spanish-language television networks advocating for fair accurate and inclusive images of LGBT Latina/os. She has also authored several editorials that have been published in La Opinión, Hoy, El Nuevo Herald, Marketing Y Medios and other magazines and newspapers. Most recently, Taher spearheaded a groundbreaking meeting with Mexico City-based Televisa Networks, the world’s largest Spanish-language media content producer in an effort to ensure better representations of LGBT people. 
Brandon A. Benavides, Past ChairBrandon Benavides is a news producer for KSTP-TV in Minneapolis, MN. Before joining 5 Eyewitness News, he was the Executive Producer for KETK-TV where he led the news team in its daily coverage and produced LIVE @ Five for the NBC affiliate in Tyler, Texas. Brandon has taught an undergraduate journalism class at the University of Texas at Tyler. He holds a master’s of arts in journalism and public affairs degree from American University in Washington, D.C. While in the District of Columbia, Brandon worked as an intern for the U.S. House of Representatives Radio-TV Gallery on Capitol Hill and “Dateline NBC” in the Washington Bureau.Brandon helped cover the funeral of Former President Ronald Reagan and watched as British Prime Minister Tony Blair addressed a joint meeting of Congress. He has a bachelor’s degree in communication from St. Edward’s University in Austin, Texas. 
Frank Trejo, Past ChairTrejo has been a general-assignment reporter at The Dallas Morning News for 16 years, covering a variety of assignments, including immigration and refugee issues and has covered the gay and lesbian community in Dallas. Prior to that, he worked as an assistant editor on the international desk and then as an assistant editor on the national desk. Trejo previously worked for The Dallas-Times Herald, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, and The El Paso Times. A native of El Paso, Trejo graduated from the University of Texas at El Paso. He has been a member of NAHJ since 1984. He was on the staff, as an editor, of the first Latino Reporter in 1988 at the NAHJ national convention in Dallas. He worked on the paper in subsequent years. He has been a member of the Dallas-Fort Worth Network of Hispanic Communicators since it was founded, and also is a member of the National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association.
