NAHJ REGION 2 CONFERENCE AND MULTIMEDIA TRAINING SESSIONS @ Emerson College, Boston
Looking for some affordable multimedia skills training? Want to network with fellow NAHJ members? Do your annual review goals require you attend a training seminar? Are you an aspiring student journalist?
NAHJ Region 2 along with NAHJ New England and Emerson College will be hosting the NAHJ Region 2 Conference and Multimedia Training Sessions

Cost: $25 for NAHJ members, $30 for UNITY members, $40 for non-members.
             $10 for NAHJ or UNITY student members, $20 non-member students

Special for non-members: if you opt to sign up for NAHJ membership on-site, we will credit the $25 conference registration ($10 for students) toward your membership.

The multimedia sessions are the following. Each session will be repeated in each of the day’s four time slots.
Audio editing
This workshop will train participants in capturing and editing high quality digital audio using Audacity. We will also discuss advanced editing techniques and ethics in editing audio.
Instructors: Russell Contreras is a reporter with the Associated Press in Boston where he covers immigration and minority affairs. He also helps with bureau with multimedia projects including audio stories for broadcast and online video. He also teaches journalism at Emerson College.
Bianca Vasquez Toness is a reporter with NPR’s WBUR where she covers Latinos and immigration.
Video capturing
This workshop will be an introductory level course in shooting and editing with Flip video and Windows Movie Maker. The focus will be on helping backpack reporters with limited equipment and a limited budget capture and record quality video.
Instructor: Jason Tuohey is a news editor at boston.com where he’s in charge of training Boston Globe staff on multimedia news gathering including Flip video capturing.
Ann Silvio is a video reporter with boston.com where she produces daily and enterprise video packages for boston.com
Video editing.
In this advanced workshop, participants will learn how to edit video using Final Cut Pro with an introduction to lower thirds, fade in and fade out techniques and different standards and practices with video/audio. This workshop is targeted at those who complete the video capturing workshop or who already have some basic knowledge of shooting/editing digitial video.
Instructor: Ed Medina is an associated editor of boston.com and former assistant executive producer at AP Digital in New York. He is in charge of the Globe’s video operation. He also teaches advanced multimedia at Emerson College.
Introduction to Soundslides
This workshop will teach participants how to use Soundslides to create audio slideshows. The instructor will also discuss techniques to fade in and fade out audio slides.
Instructor: Derrick Henry is a senior producer at the New York Times where he covers breaking news and oversees multimedia projects including audio stories and slideshow production. He also teaches multimedia journalism at Columbia University.
The conference will also feature panel discussions targeted at both professionals and students.
