The Facebook Journalism Project and NAHJ Unveil New Scholarship to Strengthen Pipeline of Diversity for Next Generation

Washington, D.C., January 25, 2018 – The Facebook Journalism Project and NAHJ are proud to announce a new partnership, beginning with a Scholarship program for students who aspire to pursue a career in journalism and media.

NAHJ Students will be able to access the application process on the scholarship immediately, published with the association’s other Next Generation programs currently available on the website here for the 2018-19 school year. As part of the Facebook Journalism Project’s commitment to providing tools and training for an informed community, this scholarship is an effort to support the future generation of journalists who will play an important role in building that community.

“We’ve worked diligently to create a strong partnership and relationship with the Facebook Journalism Project these past couple of years, ensuring our members are the first to know of opportunities ranging from training to certification,” commented Alberto B. Mendoza, NAHJ Executive Director. “I am extremely pleased to see this example of an important initiative to strengthen the pipeline of diversity in journalism.”

Under this scholarship, NAHJ will receive $250,000 in total to award $50,000 across five years; and five awards of $10,000 will be granted to applicants per year.

“Many of the students I talk to are struggling to pay for college,” Leslie-Anne Frank, Director, Next Gen. Initiatives at NAHJ. “Being awarded a $10,000 scholarship would be remarkable for them! We’re so grateful Facebook created the Facebook Journalism Project NAHJ Scholarship so that more of our students can earn their degrees.”

To be eligible to receive the scholarship, applicants must be enrolled juniors, seniors, or graduate students at an accredited university in the United States pursuing a degree in digital media/journalism/communications with a commitment to storytelling as demonstrated by completed coursework, clips/work samples and a letter of recommendation from professor or internship supervisor familiar with their work and attesting to career commitment.
