NAHJ Awards Members During Annual Convention GALA

SEATTLE
-- The National Association of Hispanic Journalists held its annual Noche de Triunfos gala July 8 which recognizes the outstanding contributions made by its members in the categories of print, radio, television and photojournalism during the UNITY '99 convention.

Each year, NAHJ holds a professional journalism contest and awards the winners with its prestigious Iceberg at the Noche de Triunfos gala.

Univision Anchor Maria Elena Salinas was the mistress of ceremonies for this year's gala held at the Westin Hotel in Seattle.

"The work of all the nominees proves that Hispanics are making tremendous contributions to the profession," said NAHJ President Nancy Baca.

The NAHJ awarded its Gullermo Marquez-Martinez award to Juan Forero of the Star-Ledger in Newark, N.J, for "Juan Manuel Returns." The award is given to the best overall contest entry in the print, radio and television category.

The Best of Show award was presented to Jose Osorio of the Chicago Tribune for "Cuba's National Pastime." The photo captures Cuba's love of baseball.

The Best of Show is awarded to the best overall photo entry. The following is a listing of all the winners for each category:

In the Print Feature category, Juan Forero of the Star Ledger in Newark, N.J., captured first place for "Juan Manuel Returns" which chronicles the life and death of Juan Manuel, a 14-year old immigrant who was killed in New Jersey and was brought back to his native Mexico for burial.

Guillermo Contreras of the Albuquerque Journal won first place in the Print News category for "Hungry for Help." The story is about the lack of resources that were distributed to Nicaragua's poorer communities after the destruction caused by Hurricane Mitch.

Jim Avila and Hugo Perez of NBC News won first place in the TV Feature category for the story "Fire Racism" which depicted racism in the Chicago Fire Department.

Carmen Escobosa of KMEX-TV in Los Angeles (Univision affiliate) took first place in the TV News category for "Mascare en Ensenada," a story about the murder of several members of a family living in Ensenada, Mexico, by a drug gang.

Arturo Quezada of KMEX-TV in Los Angeles (Univision affiliate) took first place for the story "Infierno Bajo Tierra." The story was about the geological shifts taken place at a sky resort in the mountains of Southern California.

Maria Martin of Latino USA won first place in the radio category for "War Hero Freddy Gonzalez." The story chronicles the life of Freddy Gonzalez, who was killed in action during the Vietnam War. It also chronicles the struggles of his mother who works as a waitress in Texas.

Marcio Sanchez of the Kansas City Star for "The Chase."

Nuri Vallbona of The Miami Herald for "Sisterly Hug."

NEWS

Giuliano de Portu-Rodriguez of Primera Hora for "Prohibido Olvidar."
