National Association of Hispanic JournalistsNational Association of Hispanic Journalists

NAHJ will present the ñ Awards to honor the lasting contributions Hispanics are making to journalism and toward achieving diversity and fairer coverage of Latinos. Through this select group of awards, NAHJ seeks to acknowledge the collective work of Latinos making solid strides in newsrooms while also recognizing the potential of Hispanic journalists to become an increasingly stronger force in the nation’s news media industry.

The ñ Awards will be presented in the following categories:

  • Leadership Award
  • Emerging Journalist Award
  • The Frank del Olmo Print Journalist of the Year Award
  • Broadcast Journalist of the Year Award (Radio and Television)
  • Photographer of the Year Award

The Frank del Olmo Print Journalist of the Year, Broadcast Journalist of the Year and Photojournalist of the Year awards are open through a nomination process to Hispanic journalists who have achieved excellence through their chosen media, or who have shown through their body of work in the 2006 calendar year that they have made a significant contribution to the Latino community and brought awareness to Latino

concerns and issues. The Photojournalist of the Year category includes both print and television photographers. Nominations may include a portfolio (photo news and photo story combinations) of work done in 2006. The Broadcast Journalist of the Year includes both radio and TV journalists.

The Emerging Journalist Award will be awarded to a Hispanic journalist with no more than five years’ experience in journalism, who within that relatively short time has

demonstrated excellence in his or her work and/or has significantly contributed to fair coverage, understanding and awareness of Latino communities and their concerns and issues. Judges will also consider the candidates’ potential to develop into true leaders and/or role models for Hispanic journalists in the United States.

To be nominated for one of the above four ñ awards, a letter of nomination, (300 words or less,) stating why this person should be recognized must be submitted.

In addition, a résumé, references and/or materials to support that the nomination adheres to our guidelines must be submitted. Additional materials include news clips, video, or publications.

The Leadership Award is for an individual, organization, or institution that makes a major contribution to or shows outstanding commitment to Latino concerns and/or media diversity and, through their work, coverage and/or advocacy, is actively working toward promoting a better understanding of Latino issues or culture.

Nominations for this award must include a letter of nomination, (300 words or less,) stating why this person, organization or institution should be recognized.

In addition, the nomination should include, if appropriate, a résumé, references and/or materials to support that the nomination adheres to NAHJ guidelines. Additional materials include news clips, video, publications, press releases, project reports and annual reports.

Members of the current NAHJ board and staff are ineligible. Nominations will be presented to a special awards judging committee, which will have full discretion on the selection of ñ Award recipients, and approved by the NAHJ Board of Directors.
