The Independent Press Association (http://www.indypress.org/) has announced the start of the 2001-02 application cycle for the George Washington Williams Fellowship, which was created to encourage journalists of color to pursue important social issues in the public interest.
The fellowship funds stories written by journalists of color about issues such as the environment, global trade policy, health care, race, and education.
Individuals may apply for financial and institutional support to write a single story or seek an investigative reporting fellowship of between three and twelve months to research a specific social issue in depth. If accepted, the fellowship will pay national commercial rates for individual stories, or $1,500 per month plus expenses for in-depth reporting.
Any journalist of color with at least three years' solid professional reporting and writing experience may apply.
Individuals with a background in investigative or enterprise reporting will be given preference. Only U.S. citizens or foreign journalists who have an established relationship with a U.S. publication are eligible.
