7:30 – 10:30 a.m.: Workshop: “Dig, Investigate, Get Resultsâ€
A three-hour workshop to build your investigative reporting skills. Learn how to better navigate public records, dig up hard to get information, and produce a compelling visual and written narrative. 10:45 a.m. – Noon: Panel: “Diversity in the Environmental Movementâ€
A panel discussion on how minority communities are affected and involved in the environmental movement with NPR’s Steve Curwood, Marcelo Bonta, founder of the Center for Diversity & the Environment, and FAMU Professor Richard Gragg. Moderated by Ayana Meade.
Noon – 2 p.m.: NAHJ Luncheon
NAHJ partners with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to present a panel titled “Health Starts Where We Live, Learn, Work and Play: Examining How Environmental Factors Impact the Health of the Latino Community.â€
2 – 3 p.m.: Panel: “Galápagos Islands: Challenges for the Evolution of Journalism in the Islands Darwin Made Famousâ€
The Galápagos, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, stand at a crossroad: join a head-on collision with 21st century development values—or educate residents how to conserve the archipelago’s rich biodiversity. This panel of journalists from the Galápagos will explore the need to create media outlets and help residents become better informed about what’s at stake: threats to wildlife; a tsunami of tourists; a surge in population and tighter controls over press freedom. Moderated by Cecilia Alvear, veteran NBC producer, and author Carol Ann Bassett.
2 – 5 p.m.: Tour: “Field to Table: Food Security and the Struggle of Those Harvesting Our Nation’s Fruits and Vegetablesâ€
A bus tour to Homestead that will take journalists to meet with farmworkers and activists who are working to improve labor conditions, reduce risk of exposure to pesticides, and combat hunger. With Laura Wides Muñoz, Hispanic affairs reporter for The Associated Press, and freelance journalist Juan Carlos Perez Duthie. RSVP required.
3 – 6 p.m.: Workshop: “Taller de Televisionâ€
Familiarizar a los periodistas con el mundo de la producción de noticias en TV. Pe-producción, trabajo de campo, y post-producción. Programas de edición de audio y video y como nutrir los contenidos para la web. Reporters are being asked to do more work behind the camera. Come perfect your video and audio recording skills with Deborah Acosta of The Miami Herald, Suzette Laboy of The Associated Press and Ihosvani Rodriguez of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.
