In Face of Gannett Job Cuts, NAHJ Stands Ready to Help

The National Association of Hispanic Journalists is disappointed and deeply concerned that approximately 700 positions from Gannett’s U.S. newspaper division have been cut. Although NAHJ recognizes the challenges that media outlets face, we are saddened that such a sizable number of journalists will once again be out of work.
It is NAHJ’s mission to ensure that media outlets across the country maintain diverse newsrooms, especially as the nation experiences unprecedented population growth among Latinos and other communities of color. Diverse newsrooms are needed to accurately portray our communities.
NAHJ stands ready to help our members who have been affected by the Gannett layoffs. Currently, NAHJ board members are compiling openings in various regions and will work to connect our talented employees with potential employers. NAHJ will share information via social media and our website, nahj.org.
We also are asking that those affected by layoffs contact NAHJ VP for Print/Financial Officer, Russell Contreras, at russell.contreras@gmail.com so that NAHJ can identify those who need assistance.
Media companies are in the midst of a difficult transition, and NAHJ stands to make that transition with our members.
You are not alone.
Un abrazo,
Michele Salcedo
NAHJ President
