If you’re new to the National Association of Hispanic Journalists we welcome you to NAHJ! NAHJ is the leading organization for Latinos in the media. We are dedicated to the recognition and professional advancement of Hispanics in the news industry, plus excellence in coverage of the entire Latino community. Be part of the networking, training, scholarships, and media advocacy that the nation’s largest organization of Latino journalists has to offer. Below are some highlights from 2011 that you made possible:

Orlando Convention. NAHJ turned its Annual Convention into a true multimedia journalism experience. More than half of the convention’s offerings were multimedia skills training or online related sessions.

Educational Programs. NAHJ awarded $82,000 in new scholarships in 2011 to 32 students pursuing a career in journalism. In addition, NAHJ brought students to Orlando to participate in the Student Projects and Student Campus training programs. More than 600 students have received more than $1.6 million in financial aid since NAHJ cut its first scholarship check in 1988.

Online Career Center. Members can now upload their resumes and view listings for jobs, fellowships and internships. Our new fully-searchable Career Center also makes it easier for employers to promote freelancing opportunities and jobs, and for NAHJ to promote its members to those seeking Latino journalists as experts or for work.

Professional Development. NAHJ held regional conferences and training sessions in New York City, Atlanta, Miami, and Chicago, and provided fellowships to mid-career journalists to attend leadership and editing training programs at The Poynter Institute.

Media Advocacy. NAHJ signed on with a movement urging President Obama and the new Administration to fulfill its promiseof preserving a free and open internet and implement the non-discrimination principles of net neutrality. We opposed the proposed Comcast/NBC Universal merger and continued our efforts to stop the use of the term “illegals” and push for more fair coverage of immigration issues. NAHJ also called on the U.S. Justice Department to take legal action to block Arizona’s Senate Bill 1070, legislation that invites racial profiling of immigrants and Latinos.

We are very optimistic that 2012 will bring new beginnings for everyone. In 2012, we plan to give more in scholarships; train hundreds more in multimedia journalism throughout the nation and at our next convention in Las Vegas; provide more training opportunities for our mid-career journalists, freelancers and Spanish language media members; find ways to help colleagues striking out on their own; and keep fighting for fair coverage of our community.

Participation and involvement of people like you made possible all that was done in 2011. And there is so much more in store for all of us in 2012. If you are new to the organization, come on board, become active. If you had been a member and let your membership lapse, rejoin now and stay active.

    Remember, Juntos we are Stronger!
