Under the theme “NAHJ @ San Juan: Evolve. Embrace. Reinvent.”, the convention in sunny Puerto Rico on June 24-27, 2009 will feature more than three dozen sessions – some lasting all day long – focused on multimedia skills training, online journalism, and technology that is transforming the gathering, production and the dissemination of news.

Student Projects

The emphasis on online journalism also holds true for the student projects at the convention. Dozens of aspiring journalists will work side by side with professionals and mentors to produce solid and innovative journalism primarily online, but across other media platforms as well as we “converge” them all to tell the stories of the convention, of our profession, and of our people in different ways and using different technological tools.

The Latino Reporter Digital website will be the main hub of content distribution for all the students’ work and a prime source of news and information about this gathering for convention participants and online users across the country and the world. Students, in their roles as reporters, photographers and/or producers for The Latino Reporter Digital, will simultaneously produce breaking news and longer form work for radio, a television news magazine, and a newspaper. The web publication and all other news produced in the various mediums will feature journalism in English and in Spanish. Students will be trained in video, audio, webcasting, podcasting and multimedia skills that are now key to building a solid resume.

Student Campus

The Student Campus is designed for college students interested in learning more about the changing world of journalism in the early stages of their career development. The students participate in intensive training, tours, mock press conferences and career-building exercises in classrooms, television studios, media outlets, the streets and neighborhoods of San Juan, and government or other types of institutions,. The program, to be held at la Universidad de Sagrado Corazón (Sacred Heart University), also features workshops and seminars on journalism ethics, obtaining newsroom internships, how to make the most out of the networking experience at the NAHJ Convention, and on various ways to write a good story in this age of multimedia journalism.

The journalism educators and professionals leading the program offer the students a real perspective on the working world of journalism today and help them gain awareness of their respective communities. The 2˝-3 day session takes place just before the convention and ends right when the convention starts so participants can fully avail themselves of the training and networking the conference has to offer. This program is geared to students who are early in their career development, mostly freshmen and sophomores, and those who have not had their first journalism internship.

Deadline and Costs

Apply now for the Student Projects or the Student Campus at the NAHJ Convention and be part of this innovative experience. The deadline to submit an online NAHJ Student Projects Application is March 31, 2009. All applications must be submitted electronically. Incomplete applications will not be considered. Students accepted into the program will receive a refund of any registration fees they may have already paid to attend the conference.

The National Association of Hispanic Journalists, with the help of their sponsors, covers the cost of registration, travel, lodging and meals for all students in the projects and the campus. In exchange, the students before and during the NAHJ Convention will be expected to fulfill their primary duty and responsibility as staffers of the student projects and participants in the student campus.

Who is eligible to take part in the NAHJ Student Project and Student Campus?

• Current college undergraduates and graduate students are eligible to take part in the NAHJ Student Projects. This includes students who currently attend community colleges and students who will graduate in May/June 2009.
  
  
• NAHJ Student members only. If you are not an NAHJ member, please go to www.nahj.org/membership to join.
  
  
• Must be available to take part in these programs from at least June 20, 2009 to June 28, 2009.
  
  
• Must be 18 years of age by June 20, 2009.
