Better Watchdog Journalism: Enterprise Beat Reporting with Documents, Databases and Difficult Sources
coordinated by IRE
This workshop will help those young journalists and beat reporters at small- to medium-sized news organizations -- and those in bureaus of larger organizations -- to learn the investigative skills that keep government and business accountable and to produce enterprising and informative stories. Critical among the skills is the ability to use federal and state FOI laws to open the doors to public information.

Leading with Power and Purpose
coordinated by The Poynter Institute
Newsroom managers – and those who aspire to management – will benefit from this skill-building workshop from the Poynter Institute. All sessions are designed to help you assess your current strengths and challenges when it comes to motivating, coaching, resolving conflicts, and making ethical decisions in your newsroom. Learn what it takes to succeed not just as a manager that people are required to follow, but as a leader that people choose to follow. All sessions are lively, interactive, and relevant to real-life newsroom issues.

TV News Boot Camp
coordinated by The Poynter Institute
Reporters, producers, photojournalists and newsroom leaders should come prepared for an intensive day focusing on cleaner, stronger writing, online resources for stories, making tough ethics calls on deadline and how to enterprise everyday.

Sports Reporting that Goes Beyond the Box Score
Many of this nation’s most respected and seasoned sports journalists lead participants in a discussion on how to go beyond the box score to improve their reporting. The full-day workshop includes sessions on basic sports writing; how to access open/public records; law enforcement, legal, and libel issues in sports coverage; and improving interview techniques. In addition, several sports editors will provide participating print and broadcast sports journalists with career advice and guidance.

Immigration: A Hands-On Workshop for Better Coverage in Your Community
A look at this issue against the backdrop of the Homeland Security Department, which now oversees immigration, and the Patriot Act. The day will include evaluation of immigration stories and discussion from reporters on how they got them; overviews and specifics from representatives of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and other government agencies involved with immigration enforcement; discussion about the role of local congressional delegations as both sources and creators of immigration legislation; and dialogue with immigration advocates and opponents often or rarely used as sources. The aim of this session for aspiring and established immigration reporters and editors is to evaluate the changing reality of immigration coverage since 9/11, go beyond the Latino community when reporting on immigration, and explore new and better ways to provide the public with information and news on this increasingly controversial topic.
