no time to prepare. But not only is it your responsibility to retell
this sleeper — you have to make it sing.
Fear not! By keeping in mind a few core rules of storytelling

fit right in on the front page, and earn you the respect of your
newsroom peers.

Get a Job! Keep a Job!
Many opportunities exist for students of color to better prepare
themselves for journalism. Do you know about them? Young
journalists will learn about the types of jobs and internships
available and how to properly prepare themselves. The panel
will address the following questions: What should I do to get
an entry-level job? What will my job or internship be like? How
do I work with a difficult supervisor? What if my job/internship
setting is not diverse? You will also learn resume preparation,
cover letter writing and interviewing tips. Find out if Facebook
and MySpace can hurt you.

Surviving the First Years
You’ve landed that first job. Now what? This session will help
young journalists who are dealing with being away from home
for the first time. Learn how to handle the huge personal and
professional changes that come at the beginning of a new
career. Panelists will also discuss personal issues such as:
developing a support system, coping with cultural differences,
making the transition from a college student to young
professional. And hear about job related issues such as the
demands of the TV news industry, when to hire an agent, and
how to thrive in that all-important first job.
