Young Journalists Workshops

Generation Y Journos as Catalysts for Change
The bolder (not afraid to tell their bosses what they think) and “net savvy” Generation Y journalists have the potential to make waves—both in how they navigate the newsroom and in the stories they tell. A session for young reporters about leveraging your unique assets to help you land a job, move up in your career and produce meaningful work.

COORDINATOR/ MODERATOR: Cynthia Leonor Garza, writer, Houston Chronicle

PANELISTS: Mónica Guzmán, Internet life reporter, Seattle Post-Intelligencer Eyder Peralta, features writer, Houston Chronicle

Making Sensational Salsa out of Moldy Mangos: How to Turn a Boring Assignment into a One-Day Wonder
It’s the same tired daily assignment you got last year. You have no time to prepare. But not only is it your responsibility to retell this sleeper — you have to make it sing. Fear not! By keeping in mind a few core rules of storytelling and digging a little deeper than the competition, that story can fit right in on the front page, and earn you the respect of your newsroom peers.

COORDINATOR/ MODERATOR: Blanca Torres, business writer, Contra Costa News (Walnut Creek, Calif.)

PANELISTS: Tania E. Lopez, reporter, Indianapolis Star
Frederick Melo, local news reporter, St. Paul Pioneer Press
Sara Steffens, social services/general assignment reporter, Contra Costa Times
Reginald Stuart, veteran reporter and corporate recruiter, The McClatchy Company

Get a Job! Keep a Job!
Many opportunities exist for students of color to better prepare themselves for journalism. Do you know about them? Young journalists will learn about the types of jobs and internships available and how to properly prepare themselves. The panel will address the following questions: What should I do to get an entry-level job? What will my job or internship be like? How do I work with a difficult supervisor? What if my job/internship setting is not diverse? You will also learn resume preparation, cover letter writing and interviewing tips. Find out if Facebook and MySpace can hurt you.

COORDINATOR/MODERATOR: Cristina Azocar, director, Center for Integration and Improvement of Journalism, San Francisco State University

PANELISTS: Doug Mitchell, project manager, Next Generation Radio/National Public Radio
Ernest R. Sotomayor, director of career services, Graduate School of Journalism Columbia University

Surviving the First Years
You’ve landed that first job. Now what? This session will help young journalists who are dealing with being away from home for the first time. Learn how to handle the huge personal and professional changes that come at the beginning of a new career. Panelists will also discuss personal issues such as: developing a support system, coping with cultural differences, making the transition from a college student to young professional. And hear about job related issues such as the demands of the TV news industry, when to hire an agent, and how to thrive in that all-important first job.

COORDINATOR: Marty Gonzalez, professor/anchor, San Francisco State University/KRON TV4

PANELISTS: Miguel Almaguer, reporter, WRC-TV (Washington D.C.) Rosa Morales, director of the Hispanics in Journalism Program, Michigan State University Joe Vasquez, anchor, KPIX-TV (San Francisco)
