Joe Ruiz has worked in newsrooms across the country, and even at a digital startup in his hometown of San Antonio.
He is currently the weekend editor for NPR, overseeing its digital news operations, and serving as the digital liaison to NPR’s weekend news shows. In this role on NPR’s engagement team, he is tasked with bringing NPR’s journalism to its digital audience, and has helped NPR’s efforts with emerging platforms, editorial promotion, newsroom diversity, and its use of archive material. Since taking over in late 2015, NPR’s weekend digital audience has increased sharply, as has its engagement on various platforms.
Previously, he was the executive producer for digital media at 41 Action News in Kansas City. He led day-to-day operations for the station’s digital platforms, including mobile and social. In Kansas City, he increased news standards and contributed to multiple long-term projects. One such project led Kansas officials to relax some of its restrictive open-records laws. He was part of the 2010 Pulitzer Prize-winning team at The Seattle Times for its breaking news coverage of a deadly attack on four police officers.
He is an alumnus of Texas State University-San Marcos. In his free time, he enjoys reading, writing, photography, sports (watching and playing). He’s slowly working on a book with his friends about their love for Texas, as well as other side hustles.
