The Republican National Committee has announced the creation of a monthly Spanish-language television news magazine "Abriendo Caminos."

The newsmagazine is an attempt by the Republican Party and President George W. Bush to reach out to the Hispanic community and Hispanic voters. It will promote how GOP policies positively affect the lives of Hispanics.

Beginning May 20, the program will air on Telemundo and Univision stations in six markets - Albuquerque, Denver, Fresno, Las Vegas, Miami and Orlando.

"Our commitment to reach out to all constituency groups is serious, and the Hispanic community is no exception," said RNC chair Marc Racicot. "... We know that Spanish-language television is an effective tool in reaching Hispanics."

Democrats criticized the show, stating that it seeks to "misinform" Hispanics about President Bush's and the Republican Party's true record.

"The GOP may be spending millions of dollars on TV shows, Web sites or infomercials to attract Hispanic voters, but the reality is that when it comes to efforts that affect Latino families, they are closing every door. Their show should be called Cerrando Puertas, or 'closing doors,'" said Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), the House Democratic Whip.

The RNC is spending more than a million dollars on the program. The new program marks a dramatic turnabout in the Republican Party's policies on language. In the mid-1990s, many GOP leaders strongly supported making English the official language of the federal government, going as far as including it in the party platform.
