10 BEST:

New York Spanish-language daily Hoy is named by the trade publication Editor & Publisher as one of the nation's 10 best newspapers, according to a May 22 article on E&P's Web site. This is the third year that the magazine has released a top 10 list. The criteria include circulation gains, community awareness, attractive design and news generated by staff initiative. E&P noted that Hoy, founded in 1998 by Newsday, made the list for its "excellent editorial content" as well as having the largest circulation of any Spanish-language paper in New York City. Hoy's circulation is 75,113, up 40% over last year.

CUBA:

Tom Fiedler, executive editor of The Miami Herald, told Editor & Publisher that the newspaper sent a reporter undercover to Cuba to cover the recent trip of former President Jimmy Carter. Fiedler said that through the years the Herald has sent reporters disguised as tourists to cover Cuba. Cuba has denied visas to Herald reporters because of perceived bias in the paper's reporting against the Cuban government.

FELLOW:

Reinaldo Ramos, managing editor of the News-Press in Fort Meyers, Fla., has been named a Nieman Fellow. The prestigious fellowship is awarded annually to mid-career journalists.
