LAWSUIT:

The Spanish Broadcasting System amended its lawsuit against Clear Channel Communication and the Hispanic Broadcasting Company July 31 and are now seeking damages of more than $500 million, claiming that the companies broke anti-trust laws.

Despite criticisms from journalism associations of color, the National Press Club awarded the book "Coloring the News: How Crusading for Diversity Has Corrupted American Journalism," by William McGowan, first place in the press criticism category during a dinner ceremony July 22 at the Press Club in Washington.

The percentage of people of color working in television newsrooms dropped from an all-time high of 24.6% in 2000 to 20.6% last year, reported the Radio Television News Directors Association July 15 in its annual survey.

Univisión Communications announced June 14 that it will purchase Hispanic Broadcasting Corp. in a $3.5 billion stock deal that merges the nation's largest Spanish-language television network and the country's largest Hispanic radio company.

New York Daily News columnist Juan González was elected president of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists during the association's 20th annual convention in San Diego, June 12-15.

WHITE MEN:

Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting released a study in its June 2002 magazine Extra! found that 92% of all U.S. news sources on the ABC, CBS and NBC nightly newscast in 2001 were white, 85% were male and when party affiliation was identifiable, 75% were Republican.

"ABRIENDO CAMINOS":

The Republican National Committee has announced the creation of a monthly Spanish-language television news magazine "Abriendo Caminos."

The newsmagazine is an attempt by the Republican Party and President George W. Bush to reach out to the Hispanic community and Hispanic voters. It will promote how GOP policies positively affect the lives of Hispanics.

COURT HEARING:
Week of May 20, 2002

The U.S. Department of Justice has asked the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Cincinnati to deny the public’s right of access to a deportation hearing against Rabih Haddad, an Islamic charity founder. The government is appealing a federal judge’s decision to open up the hearings.
