| SILA SPEAKS OUT:
Puerto Rico Gov. Sila María Calderón used the venue of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists' 12th annual scholarship banquet at New York City's Plaza Hotel Feb. 22 to call for the U.S. Navy to stop its bombing on the island of Vieques. She emphasized the health hazard 60 years of naval activities have created for its population. The speech was her first major address on the mainland since she was elected Puerto Rico's first female governor last November. The annual banquet is a fundrasier for the NAHJ Rubén Salazar Scholarship Fund founded in 1986. This year's event grossed more than $200,000. The NAHJ has awarded close to a half million dollars to students since the inception of the program.
