| REAFFIRMING DIVERSITY:
The board of directors of the Radio and Television News Directors Association has reaffirmed its commitment to the principle of diversity in the nation's newsrooms in response to a federal court ruling in January that found the Federal Communications Commission's Equal Employment Opportunity regulations unconstitutional.
In 1998, the board had unanimously passed a resolution that stated, "RTNDA remains committed to the concept of equal employment in the workplace and will continue to urge its members to embrace the principle of diversity in the nation's electronic newsrooms."
DIVERSITY AWARDS:
The RTNDA is accepting applications for its second annual RTNDA/UNITY award, presented annually to news organizations that demonstrate an on-going commitment to covering diversity in the communities they serve. The award is part of RTNDA's covenant with UNITY: Journalists of Color to achieve diversity in the newsroom. The deadline to apply is April 30. FREE PRESS:
México President Vicente Fox told a delegation from the Inter-American Press Association that the Mexican government should not intervene with the press' freedom and said that his administration was studying legislation in Latin America that deals with the right of the press to have access to public information. "I am fully convinced of the need for there to be a total transparency and broad freedom of the press without any kind of regulation or intervention on the part of the state," Fox said. The delegation met with Fox on Feb. 28. Among its requests, the delegation asked Fox to view the murder of journalists as a crime punishable under federal law.
