HISPANIC 100:
Six national experts on the Hispanic media will select the top100 Hispanic journalists in the United States, all of whom will be honored at the Hispanic Media 100 gala in Miami later this year. The experts are Mario Diament, associate professor at Florida International University in Miami, Nicolás Kanellos, director of the recovery project at the University of Houston, Jim Medina, managing editor at Hispanic Business Magazine, Oscar Somoza, professor at the University of Denver, Beatriz García, executive business editor at The Miami Herald and Helena Berdote, research executive at Hispanic Trends. Journalists must work at least a portion of their time for the Spanish-language press. This summer, The Journalist & Financial Reporting (TJFR) Group will publish a magazine highlighting the 100 journalists selected this year. The Hispanic Media 100 gala will be held on Saturday, Aug. 23 in Miami. Its gala will benefit the Recovery Project, which is aimed at recovering Spanish-language media at the University of Houston. A portion of the proceeds will provide scholarships for the journalism program at FIU.
MAYORAL DEBATE:
Telemundo KVEA-TV, Channel 52, La Opinión and the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials Educational Fund sponsored a debate between Los Angeles mayoral candidates James Hahn and Antonio Villaraigosa May 29 in Los Angeles. It was the only debate of the campaign broadcast live in Spanish. It aired on KVEA as well as on Radio única.
FOREIGN MINISTER:
Mexico Foreign Minister Jorge G. Castañeda will be the feature speaker during a plenary session on U.S.-Mexico relations June 21 at the National Association of Hispanic Journalists' 19th annual convention in Phoenix.
