QUOTING RAY:

The summer edition of The Nieman Reports devotes a section to Latinos in journalism, written entirely by Latino journalists. One of the authors, Ray Suárez of the NewsHour with Jim Lehrer, shares his observations on the "potential and paradox" of Latinos in journalism.

He writes:

"For years, we have accepted the notion inside la familia that we do not have to work harder, be smarter and make fewer errors than other reporters just to stay even. At the same time as that remains true in many newsrooms, it is also true that Latinos will now also be given the questionable privilege to be mediocre that our Anglo brothers and sisters have long enjoyed."

RENO NEWS:

Former U.S. Attorney General Janet Reno appeared on the Spanish-language station WQBA-AM in Miami June 15 and defended her decision to remove Elián González from the home of his Miami relatives forcibly. About 30 protesters jeered Reno outside the radio station, calling her among other names a murderer. Reno has recently expressed interest in running for governor of Florida in 2002.

HTN GOES 24 - 7.:

Hispanic Television Network Inc. announced it has ended an agreement to air 24-hour Spanish-language programming with Los Angeles station KJLA and will instead expand current contracts with cable systems owned by AOL Time Warner and AT&T.
