WAN REPORT:
Eight journalists have been killed in Colombia and two in México so far this year according to the Paris-based World Association of Newspapers. WAN reported that 33 journalists were killed worldwide, up from 30 last year. The association, which defends press freedom worldwide, represents 17,000 newspapers. Its membership includes 63 national newspaper associations and 17 news agencies.

The Chicago Tribune has named George de Lama deputy managing editor for news. De Lama, the son of Cuban immigrants, has been an associate managing editor for foreign and national news for the Tribune...Liz Balmaseda, columnist for the Miami Herald and Cristina Saralegui, Univisión talk show host and magazine publisher, will be honored at September's Hispanic Heritage Awards in Washington, D.C. Balmaseda will be recognized for Literature; Saralegui will be honored for Leadership.

Arlene Martínez, a former sports writer with the North County Times in San Diego, Calif., has joined the staff of Weekly Report as the 2001-02 reporting fellow. Martínez is a 1999 graduate of the University of California-Santa Barbara and a native of Carlsbad.

EFE, the Spanish news service, had launched an English-language Web site www.efenews.com that covers news primarily about U.S. Latinos. The site will also carry news from Latin America.
