COLUMNIST:
Univisión anchor María Elena Salinas has signed a deal with King Features to write a weekly column that will appear in both English and Spanish. Salinas told Weekly Report that she will write mostly about issues affecting Latinos but will also comment on other subjects from a Hispanic perspective. The veteran Univisión anchor currently writes a weekly column for Univision.com and provides a daily minute-and-a-half commentary for Radio Unica.
NABJ:
Condace Pressley was elected president of the National Association of Black Journalists during the association's 26th annual convention in Orlando, Fla. Aug. 22-26. Pressley, assistant program manager with WSB Radio in Atlanta, replaces Will Sutton. She will serve a two-year term. NABJ members also agreed to create a financial-oversight committee that will provide financial advice to the NABJ board. NABJ ran a deficit last year of close to $500,000. NABJ had cited lower attendance during its last two conventions, held in Seattle and Phoenix, and stock market troubles as reasons why the organization ran the deficit.
FREEDOM FORUM:
The Freedom Forum Board of Trustees has awarded Vanderbilt University a $2 million gift to create an ongoing scholarship program for students of color. The scholarships, which cover four years of tuition for incoming freshmen, will begin being awarded next year.
