MEATBALL AD:

Reform Party presidential candidate Patrick Buchanan has unveiled his first campaign ad denouncing immigration and what he perceives as attacks against the English language in a spot entitled "Meatball."

In the ad, a man chokes on a meatball when he hears an announcer saying that the government is stripping English of its status as the country's national language. The ad notes that President Clinton signed an executive order in August that makes federal programs and services more accessible to non-English speakers.

While choking on his meatball, the man calls 911 and hears an automated menu of languages to choose from.

He collapses and dies before hearing the selection for English.

The ad then asks viewers, "Do you ever miss English? Immigration is out of control. Bush and Gore are writing off English for good."

Buchanan, who received $12.6 million in federal election funds this month, will air the spot in 24 states including, California.

CABLE CHANNEL:

Belo and Cox Communications announced Sept. 28 that the companies jointly will launch Oct. 16 Más! Arizona, the Southwest's first Spanish-language cable news, information and sports television channel.

Más! Arizona will be based in Phoenix and will air 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The channel will follow a 30-minute newswheel, providing the latest updated news and headlines.
