LATINOS FOR GORE:

The National Association of Hispanic Publications released Oct. 30 results of a national survey of its members' readers on their presidential choices. Respondents preferred Vice President Al Gore over Texas Gov. George W. Bush 46% to 25%, with 27% still undecided. Ralph Nader received 2%, Pat Buchanan 1%. Taken August/September, it tallied 10,327 responses from 107 publications  Of that number, 71% were born outside of the United States; 33% have become citizens.

"Unfortunately, none of the presidential candidates spent any serious time or resources addressing the issues that concern Latinos." said NAHP President Zeke Montes.

ELIAN HONORED:

Elián González has been selected by The Freedom Forum as the recipient of its inaugural $1 million Al Neuharth Free Spirit Award. The award will be given annually to individuals or groups that have "demon-strated an abundance of free spirit, either through a significant act or a lifetime of achievement."

The $1 million Free Spirit Youth Refugee Fund has been established in Gon-zález's name. The Fund will provide humanitarian and educational aid to needy refugee child- ren in the United States.

FELLOWSHIP:

The Freedom Forum, American Society of Newspaper Editors and the Associated Press Managing Editors have announced the creation of a fellowship program to attract more journalists of color to daily newspapers with a circulation under 75,000. Up to 50 journalists will be selected for the two-year program. They will each receive $20,000 to supplement their income, and the participating newspaper will provide each journalist a mentor and partner colleague.
