ROSADO NAMED TO TRANSITION TEAM:

New York City Mayor-Elect Mike Bloomberg named 56 people to his transition team Nov. 19, including El Diario-La Prensa Publisher Rossana Rosado. She was one of nine Latinos selected for his team.

Bloomberg captured 50% of the Latino vote in his win over Democratic challenger Mark Green earlier this month.

Rosado told Weekly Report that her selection to the transition team is recognition of the role El Diario plays in the community. She added that one of the paper's missions to empower the city's Latino community.

El Diario endorsed Bloomberg over Green after the Democratic candidate was criticized for campaign tactics he used to defeat party rival Fernando Ferrer in the primaries.

"The message should go out loud and clear that no political party should take the Latino vote for granted," the paper wrote.

ASNE STUDY:

The lack of opportunities and professional challenges are the main reasons why journalists of color leave the news industry, according to a study commissioned by the American Society of Newspaper Editors.

ASNE examined 13 other studies conducted since 1989 that look at the issue of retention. Among its major findings:

  • Between one-fifth and one-third of journalists of color do not expect to remain in journalism over the long term
  • Advancement opportunities are "far more salient to journalists of color than to whites."

AWARD:

The Miami Herald's Andrés Oppenheimer was selected Nov. 15 as a recipient of the King of Spain International Journalism Awards for a series of articles on the role U.S. multinational corporations and banks play in corruption in Latin America.

The prize is sponsored by the Spanish news agency EFE and the Spanish Agency for International Cooperation.
