SPANISH PAGES:
The Shelbyville Times-Gazette in Tennessee began Nov. 3 printing two pages in Spanish every Friday to serve the area's growing Spanish-speaking community. Editor Mark McGee told Weekly Report that between 5,000 - 7,000 of the 35,000 people living in Bedford County are Hispanic.
Although a few readers called to object or cancel their subscriptions, the overall reaction has been favorable, he said. The pages contain translated stories from other sections and local Latino community news. Published Monday through Friday, the paper has a daily circulation of 8,200.
McGee said that David Carrera, pastor of the town's First Baptist Church, suggested the idea to him and publisher David Segroves last summer.
A native of Ecuador, Carrera translates several stories each week and writes a regular column. Formerly, he produced a Christian radio and television program in Quito.
McGee added that the paper has had no problems finding advertising for the two Spanish pages. He hopes to increase the number to four or six in about six months.
GONZALEZ TRIBUTE:
C-SPAN broadcast live Dec. 5 a one-hour tribute by members of Congress to Henry B. González (D-Texas), who died Nov. 28 at age 84. Members made their remarks from the House floor. Rep. Ciro Rodríguez managed the hour, which included comments from fellow Texas Democrats Charles González, Henry B's son who succeeded him in Congress; Solomón Ortiz and Rubén Hinojosa.
