Vargas Named Co-Anchor of ‘World News Tonight’
ABC News has announced that Latina journalist Elizabeth Vargas will take the helm as co-anchor for the broadcast network’s evening newscast, “World News Tonight”. Vargas, along with co-anchor Bob Woodruff, will debut on Tuesday, January 3.

NAHJ Saddened by Death of Member Leon Valdivieso
NAHJ is saddened by the death of member Leon Valdivieso, 25, who was killed Oct. 30 after being hit by a Metro train in Washington, D.C. Valdivieso took part in the association’s student campus during the association’s national convention this past June.

NAHJ Requests Proposals for Mag. Content Analysis
The National Association of Hispanic Journalists is seeking to hire a researcher to examine the coverage of Latinos by the nation’s three leading news magazines - Time, Newsweek and U.S. News and World Report. Deadline for proposal submission is Dec. 12, 2005.

NY Times Addresses Article Accusing Rivera
On Sept. 27, NAHJ reported that the NY Times had issued a correction acknowledging that Fox News' Geraldo Rivera had not "nudged" a Katrina rescue worker. Technically, the newspaper's acknowledgment was not a correction; it appeared as an editor's note. NAHJ president Veronica Villafañe recently sent a letter to the newspaper's publisher calling for a correction.

Noche Winners Paid Tribute to Those They Cover
The winners at NAHJ’s 20th Annual Noche de Triunfos Journalism Awards Gala paid tribute to those they cover and shined a light on unpunished crimes across the border, the hard life of farm workers, the scourge of racial injustice, and issued a call to stop using the country’s immigrants as scapegoats.

Latino Journalists After Katrina: Struggling but Safe NAHJ Board Considering Plan for Aid
In recent days, NAHJ has spoken with several members and Latino media professionals from the New Orleans area since Hurricane Katrina hit the gulf coast. Currently, the NAHJ board is discussing a plan to aid these journalists, as well as other Latino journalists in the areas affected by Katrina.

Campaign for Parity Raises More Than $36,000

NAHJ is converting its membership to a calendar year renewal structure. Regular member dues will remain $55 per year. However, NAHJ’s Board of Directors has established a dues structure that will accommodate all pending renewals and expirations.

NAHJ Discouraged by Network Coverage of Latinos
In its 10th Annual Network Brownout Report released today, NAHJ found that out of an estimated 16,000 stories aired on the network evening newscasts in 2004, only 115 stories, or 0.72 percent, were exclusively about Latinos.
