NAHJ Welcomes New Regional Directors to its Board

Washington – The National Association of Hispanic Journalists is proud to welcome three new regional directors and one returning director to its board. Elections were held following the association’s annual conference, and the new board members were selected by NAHJ members in their regions.

The elections decided the regional directors for NAHJ regions two, four, five and seven. A special election is currently being held for regions one and eight. Ballots for these races are due back to the NAHJ office by August 16th.

ELECTION RESULTS:

Joanna Hernandez, an editor for NY Times Regional Newspapers, ran uncontested and replaces Daniel Roca, a freelance producer and director who did not seek re-election.

Region two includes Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, New Jersey, Rhode Island and Vermont.

Maria T. Padilla, an editorial writer for the Orlando Sentinel, defeated Geraldine “Jerry” Berrios, a reporter for The Miami Herald who sought re-election to the position.

Region four includes Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee.

Manuel De La Rosa, a reporter for KRGV-TV, ran uncontested and replaces Gary Piña, the Arlington news editor for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram who did not seek re-election.

Region five includes Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Texas.

Elizabeth Aguilera, a reporter for The Denver Post, won re-election and will remain the director for region seven.

Region seven includes Arizona, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming.




Founded in 1984, NAHJ's mission is to increase the percentage of Latinos working in our nation's newsrooms and to improve news coverage of the Latino community. NAHJ is the nation's largest professional organization for Latino journalists with more than 2,300 members working in English and Spanish-language print, photo, broadcast and online media.
