NAHJ Relieved by Miller's Release

Media Contact: (202) 662-7152

The National Association of Hispanic Journalists is relieved to know that jailed New York Times Reporter Judith Miller has been released from prison.

According to press accounts, she was released after she had a telephone conversation with Vice President Dick Cheney's chief of staff, I. Lewis Libby. Miller has agreed to speak with federal investigators about her source that discussed the identity of a CIA covert officer, Valerie Plame.

Special prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald has tried to get Miller to reveal her source to a grand jury investigating whether Bush administration officials leaked Plame's identity. Even though Miller never wrote an article about Plame, a federal judge ordered her jailed for refusing to testify about her sources before the grand jury.

NAHJ feels she should never have been sent to jail for upholding her right to protect a source.

Judith Miller spent 85 days in jail.
