NAHJ Mourns the Death of Former Board Member Martin Barreto

The National Association of Hispanic Journalists mourns the death of former NAHJ board member Martin Barreto who was found dead in his Manhattan apartment on August 22. According to news reports, Barreto, 49, died as a result of asphyxiation.
Barreto had a distinguished career in journalism and public relations.

Barreto was the president and CEO of Barreto & Brightwell Associates, a public relations and marketing communications agency specializing in the U.S. Hispanic and Latin American markets.

Before joining Barreto & Associates, he directed all strategic public relations and media efforts for the IBM Corporation in Latin America. He also served as the assistant press secretary for New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani.

Barreto began his career at CBS News and later served as director of public affairs and editorials at WCBS Newsradio 88 in New York.

Barreto was elected to the NAHJ board as the Region 2 director (Northeast) in 1993. He served on the board until 1996.
