    John S. and James L. Knight Foundation The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation has given NAHJ a grant to help train the next wave of highly-skilled multimedia journalists at the 2009 Convention in San Juan, Puerto Rico.     Apply Now to Be Part of Student Projects
    and Student Campus in San Juan

    Applications are open for the NAHJ Student Projects and the Student Campus to be held during the NAHJ Annual Convention in San Juan in June. With a primary focus on convergence, the projects will feature The Latino Reporter Digital website as a main hub for all students’ work. The Student Campus, chock full of journalism skills training and leadership exercises, is designed for students in the early stages of their career development. Application deadline is March 31, 2009!

    NAHJ Scholarship Applications Open
    Applications are now available for NAHJ’s scholarships awarded annually to aspiring Latino journalists and other students committed to journalism through the Rubén Salazar Scholarship Fund. All applications are to be completed online and the deadline is April 6, 2009. Scholarships are possible this year thanks to contributions from individuals, corporations and foundations, including annual donations from Noticiero Univisión Co-anchor María Elena Salinas, FOX News Senior Correspondent Geraldo Rivera, the Samuel Newhouse Foundation and the Ford Motor Company.

    Four Washington, D.C.-based internships at Spanish-language weeklies or at English-language Hispanic publications are available this summer and students are encouraged to apply now! The twelve-week internship program, sponsored by the Ford Motor Company Fund, seeks to give students a chance to gain valuable training in covering local Latino communities and national Hispanic issues in Spanish.     La Nueva Frontera Digital a Success
    "La Nueva Frontera Digital: A Multimedia Experience for Journalists," held at Temple University Jan. 31 attracted nearly 140 people from throughout the Northeast and Detroit.     Tony-Award Winner Lin-Manuel Miranda to Keynote NAHJ Banquet
    Tony-Award-winning playwright and composer Lin-Manuel Miranda, creator of 2008’s Best Musical In The Heights, will be the keynote speaker at the 20th Annual NAHJ Scholarship Banquet on Feb. 26 in New York City. Reflecting NAHJ’s mission, the play tells the story of the Latino experience, and creating this work while in college is inspirational for the young people the Ruben Salazar Scholarship Fund seeks to help.     NAHJ Commends President Obama’s Swift Move Towards Transparency
    President Barack Obama's first two executive orders represent an important step toward increasing transparency in the executive office and renewing the federal government's responsibility to its people through the Freedom of Information Act, according to the NAHJ Board of Directors. These orders are a reversal of post 9/11 Bush Administration policies that sought to block the public’s right to know.
