Campaign for Parity

U.S. Hispanics are now the nation’s largest minority group, accounting for half the U.S.’s population growth in the past two years and 13% of the total U.S. population. Yet, Hispanics still remain grossly underrepresented in our nation’s newsrooms.

The lack of Latino journalists in America’s newsrooms affects how news organizations cover Hispanics. Currently, Latinos make up only 4% of newspaper employees and only 6% of the local TV newsroom work force. The American Society of Newspaper Editors (ASNE) has called on the industry to substantially increase representation and reach parity by 2025.

In response, NAHJ is proud to launch the Campaign for Parity, a multi-year initiative to strengthen education and professional development opportunities for Latino journalists, increase advocacy efforts around coverage of Latinos and partner with media companies across the U.S. to more rapidly achieve newsroom parity.

Assuring accurate coverage that reflects the needs and culture of our community is critical to creating a just and sustainable democracy. Your participation in the Campaign for Parity will improve the quality of journalism and positively impact our Latino community.
