NAHJ expects to launch the Parity Project at the Napa Valley Register
in early 2005.
Naples
Daily News
The Naples Daily News hosted a meeting with NAHJ and community
members in Sept. 2003. The newspaper was the third in the Scripps
Howard chain to embark on the Parity Project with NAHJ.
North
County Times
NAHJ launched the Parity Project at the North County Times
in Escondido, Calif., January 28, 2004.
Rocky
Mountain News
The Rocky Mountain News in Denver was the first partner in NAHJs
Parity Project, which was launched at that newspaper on April
22, 2003. Since then, there has been a dramatic increase in the
percentage of minorities working in the newsroom of this publication.
San
Angelo Standard Times
NAHJ co-hosted a town hall meeting with the San Angelo Standard
Times on Dec. 15, 2003. Over 50 community members attended
the event to discuss the paper's coverage of issues affeting the
area's Latino community.
Santa
Maria Times
NAHJ expects to launch the Parity Project at the Santa Maria Times
in early 2005.
Scripps
Academy for Hispanic Journalism
Scripps announced on Dec. 3, 2003 that as part of the Parity Project
the chain is creating a young reporters training program at the
Rocky Mountain News. Under the project, the Scripps Academy
for Hispanic Journalists, four Latino college graduates or young
reporters will be hired each year at the News, trained and mentored
for two years, then offered a permanent job at one of the Scripps
papers.
The
Sentinel of Hanford, Calif.
NAHJ expects to launch the Pairty Project at The Sentinel
in early 2005.
Treasure
Coast Newspapers
The Treasure Coast Newspapers are owned by the E. W. Scripps Company.
They include: The Press Journal of Vero Beach, Fla., The
Tribune of Fort Pierce/Port St. Lucie, Fla. and The Stuart
News of Stuart, Fla. NAHJ expects to launch the Parity Project
at these publications later this year.
Ventura
County Star
NAHJ launched the Parity Project at the Ventura County Star
in June 2003 and is currently working with the paper and the community
to improve news coverage of Latinos and increase the number of
Latinos in the newsroom staff.
Wichita
Falls Times Record
The Parity Project was unveiled
at the Wichita Falls Times Record News on Dec. 17, 2003
with a town hall meeting and diversity training.
