Why NAHJ's Parity Project Works

By Peter Roghaar
Director of News and Broadcast Operations
WPTV NewsChannel 5 (owned by E.W. Scripps Co.)
West Palm Beach, Fla.

WPTV partnered with NAHJ on the Parity Project in the spring of 2006. NAHJ arranged for a session to discuss with our staff the diversity in our market. We then hosted a two-hour town hall meeting with 50 Hispanic community leaders. This was a great night to better build relationships, trust and understanding. We then formed a Hispanic Community Advisory Committee which has met four times and will continue to meet quarterly.

Through our Parity Project partnership, we improved our relations with several area Hispanic organizations. Just last month, we hosted the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce’s quarterly meeting at our station. We have also established a great relationship with Portada, the leading local Hispanic magazine. We now promote in their magazine and we just purchased a table at their upcoming party. We have also added several diverse contacts for stories and our reporters have benefited from these new sources. In terms of recruitment, one of our best reporter hires was a result of the Parity Project. Marci Gonzalez was working at News 12 in Bronx, NY and was brought to my attention by Parity Project director Kevin Olivas. Marci has been a terrific reporter for us and has added a unique perspective within our newsroom.

Being a Parity Project member has clearly raised the awareness of our staff to the importance of diversity in the newsroom, both in terms of the stories we cover and the people we employ. The partnership has paved new roads for story contacts and ideas. It has also widened the talent pool for new hires. With our ever-changing communities, it makes a lot of sense to be a Parity Project member and I am truly pleased with our experience thus far.
