TCN Editor Gets Fellowship to Improve Coverage of Immigration
Mike Canan, who is the metro editor at the Scripps Treasure Coast Newspapers along Florida's Atlantic Coast, has been awarded a fellowship to attend a "Covering Immigration" seminar presented by the International Center for Journalists from April 16 - 24, 2007 in Washington, D.C.
Canan's fellowship is sponsored by the Robert R. McCormick Tribune Foundation, which is a major funder of NAHJ's Parity Project. It is also sponsored by the Scripps Foundation.
This program convenes journalists from both English and Spanish-language media in the U.S., as well as journalists form Latin America, for an extended workshop on covering immigration issues.
According to Scripps Treasure Coast Newspapers managing editor Dennis Durkee, Canan is one of only seven English-language media applicants to be accepted into this program.
NAHJ's Parity Project was initially launched at the Scripps Treasure Coast Newspapers in March 2005. Those publications have hired several Latino journalists since joining the Parity Project.
The Treasure Coast Newspapers have also recently run several features related to immigration. One of these stories was a multimedia piece published last month, which included photography done by NAHJ member Julio Cortez, in which a man from Guatemala was profiled as he sought work as a day laborer in Florida's Martin County.
