The Rocky Mountain News is looking for an Online Opinion Editor to help make our site the go-to place to understand the issues and thinking of the Rocky Mountain west. The successful candidate will be committed to developing a Web site that is a showcase of intelligent, provocative commentary and opportunities for readers to participate and to interact.

Candidates must be good writers, editors and bloggers, and have plenty of ideas for features that attract readers and keep them coming back. They should value the best thinking from across the political spectrum on the compelling issues of the moment, and be committed to presenting it every day on www.RockyMountainNews.com. The successful candidate will have strong Internet skills, preferably a background in running and developing a web site.

The online opinion editor will be a member of the editorial board of the newspaper. Because the online opinion editor will contribute editorials for the newspaper and Web site, we’re looking for candidates sympathetic to the outlook of the Rocky's editorial page, which generally favors free enterprise and open trade over government management of markets, and individual liberty over regulatory mandates.

The position reports to the Editorial Page Editor. Competitive salary and performance-based pay plan.

Web Police Reporter Posted May 13, 2008
The Rocky Mountain News is looking for a nimble, tech savvy reporter to cover, report and write breaking news stories for the Web as a beat assignment. This person will work in real time to get local news on www.RockyMountainNews.com and must be able to deftly juggle multiple stories and priorities and work well under deadlines throughout the day. The Web police reporter will also contribute content to the print editions of the Rocky Mountain News.

The ideal candidate will have a four-year college degree and a minimum of three years as a reporter or editor on a daily newspaper or online news site; experience in gathering basic audio and video for online use is a plus.

Candidates must have excellent command of English grammar and AP style, and an ability to learn new technology quickly; must be a self-starter who can develop news sources out in the community and follow local developments and trends. Internet research, multi-media and database skills are preferred.

Web Design Producer Posted May 13, 2008
This person will work with our developers and producers to build innovative tools and applications for www.RockyMountainNews.com. Some basic duties: troubleshoots problems with code and corrects accordingly; stays current on web industry trends and techniques - especially in design and animation - and is proactive in learning new methods and implementing on site. Candidates should have a love for news and be able to work quickly and effectively in a highly competitive, deadline-oriented environment.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Advanced HTML and CSS proficiency
  • Understanding of user interface and ability to produce designs that meet users’ needs
  • Proficiency in Flash 8/Flash CS
  • Proficiency in Adobe InDesign and Photoshop CS
  • Experience with online audio/video production
  • Experience with Final Cut Pro and/or Adobe Premier
  • Experience with FLV video formatting
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Ability to work in a team environment and under pressure, with tight deadlines

Additional skills:

  • Experience with ColdFusion 6.1 and higher
  • Experience with SQL
  • Experience with XML
  • Experience with Python

    This person must also be able to: Balance priorities and take deadlines seriously. Think and learn quickly. Take ownership of projects and be proactive in problem-solving. Help conceive and develop database-driven projects for use in print and on the site.

    Design producer requirements: Thorough knowledge of web production languages and software including HTML, CSS, Flash 8/Flash CS, Javascript, ColdFusion, XML, SQL, dynamic publishing experience; familiarity of multimedia applications such as Adobe Indesign and Photoshop CS, Final Cut Pro and/or Adobe Premier. Must be able to work effectively under deadline pressure. College degree, media experience, and minimum two years experience with Web design, hosting and maintenance required. Must be willing to work some night and weekend shifts.
