The Virginian-Pilot
Norfolk, Virginia
Summer 2009 Internship Program Posted May 21, 2008
Are you a college student who has completed your junior or senior year? Have you worked on your college newspaper? Would you like to spend your summer working at a 180,000-circulation newspaper located near the beach? Then you are eligible for The Virginian-Pilot summer internship program! The program is aimed at students with the following career aspirations: Reporters, Copy Editors, Photographers and Page Designers.

The Virginian-Pilot internships are highly competitive. Therefore, experience working on a college newspaper is a must, and a previous internship at a daily paper is a plus. Reporters and photographers will need a car. Sophomores and graduate students also are eligible. Interns will have regular opportunities to meet with The Pilot’s editors and other newsroom professionals to talk about their career options.

Interested? Then here’s what you need to do:
1) Submit a cover letter and a resume that includes the names of three references.
2) Reporters, copy editors and designers should submit a print portfolio that includes eight to 10 published work samples showing the range of your best writing, page layout or headline writing.
3) Photographers and graphic artists should submit a print portfolio that includes at least 20 samples of published photographs or illustrations.
No CDs, please.

Staff Writer/Business Team Posted May 23, 2008
Job code: 1824

The Virginian-Pilot, a daily newspaper of 197,000 seven-day average circulation serving Southeastern Virginia and Northeastern North Carolina, is seeking a staff writer to cover economic development on its Business Team.

The hard-working and seasoned reporter who tackles this beat in Hampton Roads will find the area fertile ground for coverage. Hampton Roads has experienced strong growth in recent years, and this trend has continued albeit at a slower rate. Economic development – including commercial, industrial and residential development – has moved at a pace much stronger than national trends. While the residential market has cooled, commercial development is booming – from downtown office towers in Norfolk to suburban offices in Virginia Beach and Suffolk to new port-related warehouses everywhere.
