National Association of Hispanic Journalists Midwest Conference comes to Motown, Nov. 21-23 2003
Latinos and the News A conference featuring professional development seminars for journalists of all career levels Detroit -- The Midwest Latino community is growing and so is the hunger for journalism that reflects its issues and people. Journalists, recruiters, educators and students will discuss the evolving nature of news that reflects the changing face of the Midwest at the fourth annual National Association of Hispanic Journalists Region 6 Conference on Nov. 21-22, 2003. The conference is at the Atheneum Hotel in Greektown, Detroit. Organizers of the conference, "Latinos and the News," invited national experts to share tips on why journalists of color leave newsrooms and what can be done to keep them, and issues of ownership and ethics in Spanish-language media, one of the fastest growing media in the United States. They also will examine race and ethics in newsrooms and offer tips on how to advance in your career, and the effect of the Latino vote in the elections of 2004. The conference begins Friday evening with a reception with a full day of programs on Saturday. The luncheon keynote speaker is NAHJ president and New York Daily News columnist Juan Gonzalez. His speech is titled "The Changing Face of American Journalism." NAHJ panelists include Detroit News Managing editor E.J. Mitchell, Wayne State University journalism lecturer Ruth Seymour, Detroit Free Press entertainment and lifestyles reporter & columnist Kelley Carter, Madonna University director of multicultural affairs Osvaldo Rivera and Chicago Tribune Recruiter Sheila R.
