WASHINGTON -- The National Association of Hispanic Journalists would like to welcome ABC’s Antonio Mora and San Jose Mercury News’ Anne Vasquez to the NAHJ board.

Mora, the news anchor for ABC’s Good Morning News, joins the board as the association’s interim vice president of broadcast. He replaces Walt Balleza who took a medical leave from the board.

Vasquez, a reporter for the Mercury News, joins the board as the association’s new at-large officer. Vasquez replaces Rafael Olmeda who stepped down from his at-large position to become the region 4 director.

WASHINGTON -- The percentage of stories about Latinos that aired on the evening network newscasts declined from 1.3 percent in 1999 to 0.53 percent in 2000, according to the National Association of Hispanic Journalists’ 2001 "Network Brownout" report.

The report found that out of 16,000 news stories that aired on ABC, CBS, NBC and CNN last year, only 84 were about Latinos. CNN was included in the study for the first time this year. In 1999, out of 12,000 news stories that aired, only 162 were about Latinos.

WASHINGTON -- The National Association of Hispanic Journalists is proud to welcome its newest board members following elections to select the association’s regional directors.The NAHJ held elections to select eight regional directors following the association’s convention in Phoenix this past June. Elections for regional directors are held every two years.

Washington, D.C. -- The National Association of Hispanic Journalists inducted Charlie Ericksen, Peter Moraga and Edith Sayre Auslander into its Hall of Fame during its second annual Hall of Fame Luncheon Ceremony June 21 at the NAHJ convention in Phoenix.

The NAHJ created its Hall of Fame in 1999 to honor those journalists whose efforts either nationally or locally have resulted in a greater number of Latinos entering the journalism profession or have helped to improve news coverage of the nation’s Latino community.

WASHINGTON -- With the 2000 Census reporting that the U.S. Hispanic population now numbers close to 40 million, the National Association of Hispanic Journalists released its first-ever resource guide June 21 to assist journalists in covering the nation's diverse Latino population. The guide, "Latinos in the U.S.: A Resource Guide for Journalists," is published by Knight-Ridder and was distributed to everyone attending the NAHJ convention in Phoenix June 20-23. The guide costs $8.50 to purchase, which includes shipping and handling. It will be posted on the NAHJ Web site in July.

WASHINGTON, June 26 -- The Nieman Foundation at Harvard University has devoted a section of its summer edition of Nieman Reports to issues affecting Latinos in journalism. All the stories in the section "Latino Voices: Journalism by and about Latinos" were written by Latino journalists or by journalists who reported extensively on Latinos. Juleyka Lantigua, managing editor of Urban Latino magazine, served as coeditor of the section. Lantigua and Amanda Cruz also translated the stories into Spanish so that a Spanish-language edition could be published. The summer issue of the Nieman Reports and the separate Spanish-language edition were distributed at the National Association of Hispanic Journalists convention held in Phoenix June 20-23.

Duarte Wins Martinez-Marquez Award at Noche de Triunfos Gala

PHOENIX -- The Arizona Daily Star’s Carmen Duarte won the National Association of Hispanic Journalists’ Guillermo Martinez-Marquez award at the association’s annual Noche de Triunfos gala held June 22 at the Hyatt Regency in Phoenix.

WASHINGTON, DC -- The National Association of Hispanic Journalists was awarded a $50,000 grant from the Philip L. Graham Fund to support NAHJ’s scholarship endowment fund. The NAHJ created the endowment last year with the goal of raising $ 1 million to support the Rubén Salazar Scholarship Fund. So far, the NAHJ has raised close to $200,000 for the endowment.
