WASHINGTON, DC Mexico Foreign Minister Jorge G. Castañeda will be the featured speaker at a plenary session on U.S.- Mexico relations during the National Association of Hispanic Journalists 19th Annual Convention in Phoenix June 20-23.
Univisión anchor María Elena Salinas will moderate the discussion with the foreign minister on issues affecting both countries. The plenary session will take place on Thursday, June 21 in the Civic Plaza ballroom at 9 a.m.
"As journalists, we are looking forward to hearing from Foreign Minister Castaneda on the status of U.S.-Mexico relations in the Fox and Bush era," said NAHJ President Cecilia Alvear. "Minister Castaneda has an uncanny ability for explaining Mexican issues in a coherent, intelligent and concise manner. It is an honor to welcome him to our convention."
Castañeda has been a central figure in Mexico in studying and writing about the country's international relations. Now as President Fox's foreign minister, his decisions directly determine Mexico's international policy.
As the foreign minister, Castañeda has defended the rights of Mexicans living abroad and has sought to improve the labor and legal status of Mexicans living in the United States.
Castañeda has been a full-time professor at the National Autonomous University of Mexico since 1979 and is the author of 12 books, five of which have been published in English and four other languages. His articles have been carried regularly in publications throughout Latin America, the United States and Europe.
Salinas, who is celebrating her 20th anniversary with Univision, is co-anchor of Noticiero Univision. As one of this nation's most respected journalists, Salinas has covered many of the nation's and hemisphere's most important news stories during the past two decades.
