Duarte Wins Martinez-Marquez Award at Noche de Triunfos Gala
PHOENIX -- The Arizona Daily Stars Carmen Duarte won the National Association of Hispanic Journalists Guillermo Martinez-Marquez award at the associations annual Noche de Triunfos gala held June 22 at the Hyatt Regency in Phoenix.
The gala was held during the NAHJ convention in Phoenix June 20-23. The Martinez-Marquez award is given to the top overall entry in the associations Professional Journalism Contest. The winner is also awarded a $1,000 grand prize. Duarte won for "Mamas Santos," a 36-part installment that ran from Feb. 13 thru March 19 of 2000. The series personalized the Arizona cotton industry by focusing on the story of Duartes mother Leonarda "Nala" Bejarano Duarte.
The Associated Press Alan Diaz won the "Best of Show" which is awarded to the top overall photo entry. Diaz won for his entry "Elian," which is the same photo that earned won the Pulitzer this year. The photo showed an armed federal agent removing Elian Gonzalez from the house of his Miami relatives. Univision anchor María Elena Salinas, who served as the emcee of the gala, was also awarded the "Presidents Award," for celebrating her 20th year as a journalist with Univision.
