NAHJ Joins Journalist Groups in Expressing Concerns Over Limiting News Gathering by Government
More than 20 media organizations, including the National Association of Hispanic Journalists, released a joint statement expressing their concerns over actions taken by the federal government that limit news gathering in the wake of the Sept. 11 attacks.
The statement reads:
"WE, as leaders of national journalism organizations wish to express our concern over the increasing restrictions by the U.S. government that limit news gathering and inhibit the free flow of information in the wake of the September 11 attacks.
We will ask members of our organizations to carefully monitor government actions and contest them when warranted.
We recognize that these are perilous times when unusual measures must be considered. However, we believe that these restrictions pose dangers to America's democracy and prevent American citizens from obtaining the information they need."
The statement was signed by:
Criminal Justice Journalists, National Conference of Editorial Writers, The Religion Newswriters Association, Public Radio News Directors, The Poynter Institute, College Media Advisors, Journalism Education Association Journalism, Women's Symposium, American Association of Sunday and Feature Editors, National Association of Minority Media Executives, Society of Professional Journalists, Associated Press Managing Editors, Radio-Television News Directors Association, Investigative Reporters and Editors, National Association of Hispanic Journalists, Society of Environmental Journalists and Association of Health Care Journalists.
The statement was released during the Associated Press Managing Editors conference in Milwaukee Oct. 10-13.
