NAHJ Now Accepting 2002 Scholarship Applications

WASHINGTON -- The National Association of Hispanic Journalists is now accepting applications for its Ruben Salazar Scholarship Fund which provides financial support to Hispanic students pursuing a degree in journalism.

The NAHJ scholarship fund has supported more than 350 Hispanic students by awarding over $500,000 in scholarships since its inception in 1986. The deadline to apply is Jan. 31, 2002. Please visit NAHJ’s Web site at http://www.nahj.org/student.html to print out an application.

Each year, approximately 40 scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $10,000 are awarded nationwide to students pursuing a degree in journalism. The NAHJ also created an endowment last year with the goal of raising $1 million to support the Rubén Salazar Scholarship Fund.

NAHJ is now accepting applications for scholarships in the following categories:

Broadcast, Print and Photojournalism Scholarships:
Those eligible: High school seniors, college undergraduates or graduate students majoring in journalism. Students majoring in other fields must be able to demonstrate a strong interest in pursuing a career in journalism.

The NAHJ Newsroom Bound Program
NAHJ will select approximately 20 college freshmen and sophomores to participate in a three-year program that consist of scholarships, training, internships and mentoring. This program is designed to provide journalism students with a more complete educational experience in journalism while providing a means for mentoring by professionals.

Cristina Saralegui Scholarship Program:
To apply, students must be a current college sophomore, fluent in Spanish and planning to pursue a career in broadcast journalism. The recipient is required to intern on the Cristina Saralegui Show during the summer following their junior year.

Newhouse Scholarship Program
Student must be a current sophomore to apply. The recipient is required to intern at a Newhouse newspaper the summer following their junior year. The program provides a stipend to attend NAHJ’s annual convention.

The mission of the NAHJ, founded in 1984, is to increase the number of Latino journalists and to improve news coverage of the nation’s Latino community.

The NAHJ Ruben Scholarship Fund was established in 1986 to assist young Latino journalists. The scholarship fund is named after Mexican-American journalist Rubén Salazar who was killed by a tear-gas projectile fired by a deputy sheriff in 1970 while covering the Chicano Anti-Vietnam War Moratorium in East Los Angeles.
