NAHJ Welcomes Mora and Vasquez to the Board of Directors

WASHINGTON -- The National Association of Hispanic Journalists would like to welcome ABC’s Antonio Mora and San Jose Mercury News’ Anne Vasquez to the NAHJ board.

Mora, the news anchor for ABC’s Good Morning News, joins the board as the association’s interim vice president of broadcast. He replaces Walt Balleza who took a medical leave from the board.

Vasquez, a reporter for the Mercury News, joins the board as the association’s new at-large officer. Vasquez replaces Rafael Olmeda who stepped down from his at-large position to become the region 4 director.

"We appreciate the generosity of Antonio and Anne and their desire to contribute to the NAHJ by serving on the board," said NAHJ President Cecilia Alvear. "We are deeply grateful to Walt Balleza for his outstanding service as vice president of broadcast and wish him a prompt and total recovery."

Mora joined ABC in 1994. He initially worked as the co-anchor of Good Morning America/Sunday. He appeared as a regular contributor to Good Morning America and served frequently as guest co-anchor of GMA.

Mora was a New York-based correspondent for World News Tonight With Peter Jennings. Mora began his career in broadcasting as a sports anchor and producer in the New York area for Univision's WXTV and later for Telemundo's WNJU. He also served as one of the original announcers of ESPN's international transmissions to Latin America.

A native of Havana, Cuba, Mr. Mora began his career as a corporate lawyer for Debevoise & Plimpton in New York. He received an L.L.M. from Harvard Law School in 1981 and a J.D., summa cum laude, from the Universidad Catolica Andres Bello in Caracas, Venezuela, in 1980.

Vasquez covers race and demographics, with an emphasis on Latino affairs, for the San Jose Mercury News. She joined the paper in 1998 from The Miami Herald, where she spent about 2 1/2 years working as a city government reporter.

At the Mercury News, Vasquez worked as an education reporter before joining the paper's race and demographics team in April 2000. She has spent much of 2001 writing census stories as one of the Mercury News' lead census writers.

Before graduating in 1996 from Florida International University with a bachelor's degree in print journalism, Anne worked as an intern for The Boston Globe and The Miami Herald, as well as freelanced for the Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel.
