Washington, D.C. -- The National Press Club is sponsoring a debate between Juan González, president of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists, and William McGowan, author of the book, "Coloring the News: How Crusading for Diversity Has Corrupted American Journalism."
The debate will take place Monday, Nov. 18, at 7:30 p.m. at the National Press Clubs Holeman Lounge in Washington, D.C. Terence Smith, media correspondent and senior producer for The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer, will moderate the debate.
NAHJ called on the press club to sponsor a debate with McGowan after the press club awarded "Coloring the News" first place in the book category for media criticism during its annual awards ceremony last July.
In his book, McGowan states that journalism standards are in decline due to the "political correctness" in the nations newsrooms in covering issues affecting people of color. NAHJ disputes the authors claims and instead contends that journalists of color have had a positive effect in bringing greater intellectual diversity to our nations newsrooms and have helped to ensure that the information needs of all U.S. residents are met.
Admission is free, but due to space limitations, reservations should be made with the press club reservation line at (202) 662-7501 or by e-mailing pnelson@press.org.
The national press is located at 529 14th St, NW in Washington, D.C.
