WASHINGTON The National Association of Hispanic Journalists and The E.W. Scripps Company announced today a new joint effort to improve news coverage of Latinos and to dramatically increase the number of qualified Latino journalists employed at selected Scripps newspapers around the country.

The parent company of the Ventura County Star has agreed to join the National Association of Hispanic Journalists in an effort to improve news coverage of Latinos and double the number of Latinos in the nation's newsrooms by 2008, the groups reported.

NAHJ to Host Parity Project in Naples, Fla.
The NAHJ will host a meeting with the Naples Daily News on Sept. 30 as the next stage of the association's Parity Project partnership with the Scripps Howard Newspaper chain. The goal of the project is to increase Latino newsroom presence and influence in selected cities with large Latino populations. NAHJ is currently working with the Rocky Mountain News and the Ventura County Star on the project.
As part of the project, NAHJ will conduct diversity training with the staff of the Daily News. NAHJ and the Daily News will also host a town hall meeting with members of the Latino community in Naples, Fla., to discuss how the paper is doing in covering the city's Hispanic community. The meeting will take place on Sept. 30 at 5:30 p.m. at the Collier Athletic Club, 710 Goodlette Road N.
