2009 Student Convention Programs
These innovative programs feature a team of students and media professionals working in a newsroom setting with emphasis on the convergence of skills needed to excel at the
various ways journalists tell stories and the public gets its news today. It provides students with a great opportunity to get hands-on training in the varying skills needed to produce
daily journalism. In addition to the benefits listed on the Sponsorship Levels page, sponsors will receive recognition on the 2009 Student Video which will be aired at the Hall of Fame Gala.
Latino Reporter Digital
This main component of the training programs offers students the chance to build a Web site from the ground up while
covering the daily activities of the convention. The students work with online media professionals in each phase of the
comprehensive site which includes newsgathering, site design and maintenance, and students in other project areas enhance their skills as they contribute stories, video, audio and other content.
Participants: 6 students, 6 professional staff

The Latino Reporter y El Reportero Latino
Students get an opportunity to write, edit, lay out and produce a newspaper covering the convention and the community. Students work as reporters, photographers, copy editors and graphic artists under the supervision of
professional journalists to publish a daily newspaper in both English and Spanish.
Participants: 25 students, 15 professional staff
Newspaper: Two editions of 1,000 copies each

El Noticiero
Broadcast journalism students produce a half-hour television newscast that focuses both on the convention and community
issues. The project trains potential reporters, videographers, producers and editors on techniques involved in producing a television news broadcast in both English and Spanish.
Participants: 12 students, 10 professional staff

Radio Ondas
Students serve as on-air reporters, anchors and producers to create stories for traditional radio and the Web. They
learn to produce all of their work using the latest digital editing and producing software with the final product being a
high-quality radio program in both English and Spanish.

In addition to these converged student training programs, NAHJ will hold its traditional Student Campus program for
students at the beginning of their journalism training.
Student Campus
This intensive, three-day program is conducted at a local college or university and trains students about coverage issues, news writing and newsroom ethics. Senior journalists and academic experts develop a curriculum to expose students to the latest industry trends and technology.
