More than 300 people attended the 2004 National
Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ) Scholarship Banquet on February

News’ Early Today Show served as MC. The keynote speaker was Carolyn
Curiel of The New York Times Editorial Board. She called on media organizations
hire more qualified Latinos for their newsrooms. NAHJ President Juan
González started the evening by calling for a moment of silence in memory
of Los Angeles Times Associate Editor Frank del Olmo, who had passed

Through the generosity of this year’s sponsors, NAHJ raised more than $180,000 from this year’s banquet. That money will be used to award scholarships to deserving Latino student journalists and will also be used for NAHJ’s Educational Programs.
The NAHJ Scholarship Fund is named in memory of Rubén Salazar, a columnist for the Los Angeles Times and a news director of KMEX-TV who died covering the Chicano Anti-Vietnam War Moratorium in East Los Angeles in 1970. For journalists of color, his legacy symbolizes the continuous fight to integrate mainstream media and ensure accurate and fair coverage of Latino issues. More than 30 years later, the spirit of his work lives on in the inspiration and accomplishments of past and current NAHJ scholars. Since the inception of the fund in 1986, NAHJ has awarded more than $600,00 in scholarships to more than 500 Latino student journalists.
¡Mil gracias!
