NO MATTER WHAT YOU NEED, NAHJ’s NEW
TECH, FINANCIAL AND CAREER CORNERS CAN HELP

The convention programming is going to make Denver the place to be that week, whether you are in a newsroom, want to work on your own as an entrepreneurial journalist, are a veteran or a newbie in the world of freelancing, need to create a digital profile, or need the financial, career and personal advice and counseling as you reinvent yourself in this new journalism landscape.

Need more multimedia journalism training?

Just like last year in San Juan, we’re turning lots of space in the Colorado Convention Center into classrooms with high-potency WiFi to make it a true hands-on training experience. Back by popular demand, the CyberLabs@NAHJ feature two rooms of constant online skills training in English and Spanish on everything from podcasting and live webcasting to audio storytelling and blogging. And we’re also bringing back all-day training sessions on Final Cut, interactive graphics for multimedia, on-air voice and presentation for Spanish-language television, and one of last year’s big hits, photography for non-photographers.

Want to be an entrepreneur in journalism and

don’t know how to start?

We’ll be choosing 15-20 journalists who wish to become entrepreneurs for an intensive training session on everything from how to get started, massaging your idea into a pitch, shaping a business plan, completing the legal and technological logistics involved, branding and marketing, and surveying various ways to fund and sustain your new business. This training session scheduled to start all day Wednesday, June 23 is open to all registrants, but people will have to apply and be selected beforehand. Stay tuned for future announcements.

Trying to make it as a freelancer?

Whether layoffs and buyouts have pushed you into the world of freelancing or you’re a veteran at working on your own, there’s something in Denver for you. We’ll cover everything from how to get started when working independently to the nitty gritty on the business of freelancing in this new media landscape.

Need to know more about tech tools and tips?

A “Geek Out!” where our experts will review the latest technological tools for journalists and sessions on the arsenal you’ll need to be a backpack journalist or an “all-platform journalist” is only part of it. The Career Expo’s new Tech Corner will feature demos by some of the hardware and software companies that are changing the way we do journalism every day.

Need the money, money, money?

Entrepreneurial journalists will learn how to create a business plan and explore the various ways they can get cash. Some potential funders and investors will be on hand to explain what they are looking for. Marketing your skills in various ways is a common theme throughout the convention programming. And if you need to get a handle on your personal finances in these challenging times of transition, reinvention and opportunity, you can go to the Career Expo’s new Financial Corner for some one-on-one counseling and financial advice.

Need to get over the paralysis of fear and frustration?

Laid off or bought out and don’t know what to do next? Several sessions will deal with the anxiety of being out of a newsroom or of still being in one, but fearing you’ll be out soon. They’ll explore how to stay sane in this time of transition, identify your skills that can keep you on the path to journalism as you reinvent yourself. Some one-on-one career and life counseling will be available in the Career Expo’s new and improved Career Corner. And learning how to build a winning digital portfolio and profile – a digital brand for yourself – and actually completing a digital resume and profile onsite under the guidance of experts can round out your experience in Denver.

Want more?

This is just some of what’s available if you make your way to NAHJ’s Convention in Denver. All this among the 60 sessions on everything from the newest technology to the impact of hate speech in the media on our Latino community, everything from narrative and visual storytelling to using social media in your reporting or cell phones to do a live shot. We will focus on ethics on the web and in Spanish-language media and discuss immigration reform and the political influence of Latinos in this election year. For some all-day sessions, you’ll have to reserve space, so stay tuned!

“NAHJ en Denver: El Grito Across the Rockies”

A revolution is afoot in news media, brimming with new excitement, yet testing our resilience. With the 28th Annual NAHJ Multimedia Convention & Career Expo, “NAHJ en Denver: El Grito Across the Rockies”, the National Association of Hispanic Journalists answers the call for change and will help hundreds meet the challenge.

Media company cuts, belt-tightening management, transitional technologies—a new reality. Instead of holding our collective breath, NAHJ keeps moving forward. We are gente willing to risk coming together and being community. We are in a position to redefine ourselves and stand tall from the highest summit in Colorado…Arriba NAHJ!

The majestic mountains surrounding Denver will be the backdrop this June 23-26, 2010 for a storm of training sessions, in-depth discussions and networking designed to give attendees more of the skills needed to be the journalists of today and tomorrow, and explore the political and economic issues vital to the country’s fast-growing Latino community.

This convention, one of the industry’s leading journalism events, will truly be a fertile training ground and a premiere networking hub for some 1,500 of our nation’s most influential Latino journalists, media executives and key political figures.

Two rooms of constant online skills training over four days in English and in Spanish, the CyberLabs@NAHJ, will feature everything from podcasting, recording audio, and editing video using Final Cut Pro to how to monetize your blog and use social networking tools effectively. Armed with their laptops, hundreds of attendees will fill classrooms set up with Wi-Fi for a valuable hands-on training experience.

The growing group of freelancers and those striking out on their own as entrepreneurial journalists will get the intensive training they need. Sessions like narrative storytelling and doing good live shots will round out discussions on the U.S. census, immigration policy and sound personal finances in the midst of crisis.

It’s about taking control of the revolution, with El Grito heard throughout history of many Latin American countries. It’s about evolving as the news industry is changing, about opening the doors and grabbing the tools to improve and reinvent yourself, about seeing the opportunities clearly enough to seize them.

And get set for four days of hard work and good fun! The 1,500- plus journalists and media executives in Denver for NAHJ will mix socially with a convention of hundreds of Latino elected and appointed officials in this mile-high environment for a social evening of politics and prose… and partying! And as we gather during the height of the premiere soccer event in the world, the convention will feature a World Cup Lounge to catch a game in a massive “tailgate” party.

Also, with the generous support of the Gannett Foundation, NAHJ is able to offer an even bigger discount to the first 250 members. Be one of the first 250 current, regular/associate/academic members to register online and pay only $250. That’s a $75 savings!

So don’t miss out! We’ll see you in Denver!

Washington, DC - The National Association of Hispanic Journalists has selected Denver, Colorado as the site of its 28th Annual Multimedia Convention and Career Expo, June 23-26, 2010 at the Colorado Convention Center.

The NAHJ convention has earned a reputation as one of the country’s premier journalism conventions, and serves as a training ground for the largest gathering of Latino journalists, with more than 1,000 Latino journalism professionals in attendance.

“The focus on multimedia and online journalism is essential as we look to the future,” said Iván Román, NAHJ’s executive director. “In Denver we will continue our commitment to offering the latest in training and trends in technology to hundreds of colleagues who strive to tell our communities’ stories.”

The convention features:

  • Multimedia Training Sessions – The ñ Media Training Series are intensive four to eight-hour sessions on everything from management to using specific software to photo, audio, and video producing/writing/editing techniques. • The Career Expo – this is the crossroads of the convention where editors and reporters meet, executive producers and cameramen trade experiences and journalists go for critiques and career advice.
