Two Top Journalists Tapped for 2010 NAHJ Hall of Fame Honors

NAHJ Hall of Fame Inductees
Ray Suarez & Gloria Campos

WASHINGTON, DC (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Veteran journalists Ray Suarez, senior correspondent for PBS’ “The NewsHour,” and Gloria Campos, anchorwoman for WFAA-TV, Dallas’ ABC affiliate, have been selected for induction into the Hall of Fame of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists.

The induction ceremony will take place June 26 during the 28th Annual NAHJ Multimedia Convention & Career Expo — one of the industry’s leading journalism events, which will offer a fertile training ground and premiere networking hub for some 1,000 of our nation’s most influential Latino journalists, media executives and key political figures – June 23-26 at the Colorado Convention Center in Denver, Colorado.

“Choosing NAHJ Hall of Famers is always a humbling experience for the board. You realize quickly that the level of talent and commitment out there among Latino journalists is immense,” said O. Ricardo Pimentel, NAHJ president.

“Ray Suarez and Gloria Campos epitomize this truism. Singly and together they represent consummate professionalism and a record of achievement that should inspire journalists everywhere. NAHJ is proud to honor them.”

A seasoned newsman with more than 35years in the business, Suarez joined “The NewsHour” in 1999  following a six-year stint as host of National Public Radio’s nationwide call-in news program, “Talk of the Nation.” He also hosts “Destination Casa Blanca,” the weekly program on Latino politics, for HITN-TV.

The author of several books, his most recent work is “The Holy Vote: The Politics of Faith in America,” an examination of the tightening relationship between religion and politics in the U.S.

After earning a degree in journalism from Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos, Gloria Campos landed a job at KGBT-TV in her hometown of Harlingen, Texas. She joined WFAA in 1984, where she became Dallas’ first Latino anchor.

Campos also hosts and serves as co-producer of “Wednesday’s Child,” an adoption feature segment, which helps find permanent homes for Texas’ foster children. An avid volunteer and board member for various nonprofit organizations, she is also the recipient of numerous awards.

Created in 2000, NAHJ’s Hall of Fame is reserved for journalists and industry pioneers whose national or local efforts have resulted in a greater number of Latinos entering the journalism profession or have helped to improve news coverage of the nation’s Latino community.

With the induction of Campos and Suarez, there are now 27 NAHJ Hall of Famers. Past honorees include such pioneering journalists as Rubén Salazar, a columnist for the Los Angeles Times and the news director of KMEX who was killed while covering the Anti-Vietnam War Moratorium rally in East Los Angeles in 1970, and Ignacio E. Lozano, Sr., founder of La Opinión, the nation’s largest Spanish-language daily newspaper. Last year’s inductees were Geraldo Rivera, host of Fox’s newsmagazine “Geraldo-at-Large”; KRON “Weekend Morning News” anchor Ysabel Durón; and founder and editor of El Tecolote newspaper and professor of journalism at City College of San Francisco, Juan Gonzales.
